Day 1: Madrid
Private car transfer in, with English speaking assistance. Accommodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 2: Madrid
Private walking tour of old Madrid with English speaking guide. A tour of the famed Prado Museum is included. Afternoon free. Overnight in Madrid.

Day 3: Madrid-Segovia-Avila-Salamanca
Depart by private air-conditioned sedan with English speaking driver/guide. Tour medieval Segovia, with its 2000 year old Roman aqueduct and fairy-tale Alcazar Castle (entries to monuments not included). Perhaps have lunch on your own in one of the famous “asadores”, where roast suckling pig or lamb are the specialties. Continue to the magnificent 11th century walled city of Avila, with free time to explore before continuing to the ancient university city of Salamanca. Accommodations at the Parador overlooking the Tormes River and the city. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 4: Salamanca-Toro-Burgos-Lerma
Morning walking tour of delightful Salamanca, with an English speaking local guide. See the University and the two cathedrals, plus the House of Shells and the magnificent main Plaza. Depart to Toro, a small village that is the center of one of the up-and-coming wine regions of Spain. Visit a winery, and enjoy some free time in the charming main plaza lined with bars proudly serving the best local vintages. Maybe enjoy a light luncheon (on your own) of jamon Serrano and/or chorizo sausages. Continue northeastward, passing Valladolid, to ancient Burgos. Free time in the historic center, perhaps to visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral which holds the tomb of folk hero El Cid and his wife Doña Ximena. Continue to the fabulous Parador of Lerma, in the quaint village of the same name, for accommodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 5: Lerma-La Rioja-Santo Domingo de la Calzada
Enter the famed wine region of La Rioja, and stop in the beautiful hilltop walled village of Laguardia for a visit to a winery and a chance to stroll the medieval cobblestone streets. Lunch on your own in one of the several excellent local restaurants. In the afternoon, visit another outstanding winery before arriving at one of the two atmospheric Paradors in the quaint village of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Be sure to visit its unique cathedral, and ask about the Legend of the Chickens. Accommodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 6: Santo Domingo-Aranda de Duero-Peñafiel
Swinging back south, bypassing Burgos and Lerma, enter the legendary Ribera del Duero wine region, noted for its robust reds. Visit an excellent winery before pausing in Aranda de Duero to visit the atmospheric El Lagar Restaurant. Ask to visit the extensive wine storage caves beneath the bar, and have (on your own) a wonderful meal. The wood roasted lamb chops are highly recommended. Continue to the town of Peñafiel, dominated by its magnificent hilltop castle, which now contains a wine museum which you may visit (included). Accommodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 7: Ribera del Duero-Madrid
Visit another of the excellent wineries of the region, before heading back toward Madrid (around a three hour drive). Late afternoon free for last minute shopping or exploring. Accommodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 8: En route
Private car transfer to Madrid airport.

Day 4: Peñafiel-Aranda de Duero-Burgos-Lerma
Visit one or two of the excellent wineries of the region for a tour and tasting. Continue to the town of Aranda de Duero to visit the atmospheric El Lagar Restaurant. Continue to Burgos where you may want to visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral. Accommodations in the fabulous Parador of Lerma, or another atmospheric hotel. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 5: Lerma-La Rioja
Continue into La Rioja, perhaps Spain’s most famous wine region. Accommodations in one of the Paradors in the quaint village of Santo Domingo de la Calzada or another nearby atmospheric hotel. Visit the wine villages of Laguardia and Haro, where you will get to tour and taste at excellent wineries, and explore the quaint streets and shops. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 6: La Rioja-Bilbao-San Sebastian
Continue northward, through the Basque mountains to vibrant Bilbao, for a visit to the famed Guggenheim Museum (entry not included). Perhaps enjoy luncheon (on your own) in one of the museum restaurants before continuing to delightful San Sebastian for a Panoramic tour and accommodations. Tonight you will probably want to explore (on your own) the atmospheric old quarter, and try some of the abundant Basque tapas (pintxos), piled high on the bars, washed down with the local txacoli (CHA-coli) wine. Accomodations. (Hotel not included in tour price)

Day 7: San Sebastian
Free day to enjoy fabulous San Sebastian. No services of car or guide. Overnight in San Sebastian.

Day 8: San Sebastian
Private car transfer to San Sebastian airport or railway station. Transfer to Bilbao airport will have a supplement.
