Avalon Waterways has announced that they will make their Douro entrance with a new itinerary and Suite Ship – the Avalon Alegria – in 2024. Marking their 15th Suite Ship in Europe and first sailings in Portugal, they are poised to offer a new view of the Old World.

Avalon Waterways’ debut Douro itinerary is the 7-night Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages itinerary, which includes “Classic,” “Discovery and “Active” excursions options for all types of travelers. A 3-night pre-cruise stay in Lisbon, Portugal is an optional extension.

​You'll sail from Porto, the striking “City of Bridges,” and entryway to the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with sprawling vineyards and enchanting quintas, which hug the vertical sides of the river. Sip wines from these vineyards and discover the enduring traditions of Portuguese winemaking all through your journey.

​From Porto you'll visit Guimaraes, Porto Antigo, Peso da Regua, Pinhao, the small village of Freixo de Numao, Barca d’Alva, a choice between Freixo de Espada a Cinta or Salamanca in Spain and then a few extra days back in Porto.

​This new Suite Ship, built exclusively to sail the Douro, will have a total of 14 Deluxe Staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites, accommodating just 102 guests and 33 crew members.  Living up to its name which means “happiness” in Portuguese, the Avalon Alegria  will highlight their signature, award-winning Panorama Suites on two full decks. Each Suite offers guests 200-square-feet of living space, Open-Air Balconies and beds facing the spectacular views for which river cruising is famous.
