Soaring volcanoes, spouting geysers, peaceful fjords, and spectacular waterfalls — clients Bonnie and Ron were recently on an epic expedition to the land of ice and fire aboard Hurtigruten's newest expedition ship the ms Fridtjof Nansen. Enjoy some of the highlights in pictures on their "Circumnavigating Iceland - The Land of Elves, Sagas, and Volcanoes" itinerary roundtrip from Reykjavík, the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavík means ‘Smoky Bay’ in English. Labeled by the first Viking colonizers who saw rising steam from the surrounding geothermal features, it is located within hours of Iceland’s legendary lagoons, geysers, hot springs, and waterfalls. Golden Circle Tour Waterfalls, geysers, and boiling mud puddles…. Many Viking and fantasy movies filmed here. Huge Icelandic dandelions. They are healthy and very bright ….not considered weeds, but are, rather, a respected wild flower. Lupine…the most prolific flower on the island We went to lectures provided on board by the Expedition Team about mammals in the arctic seas, birds of Iceland, and Icelandic geology/volcanoes. Very interesting. Then we went out in Zodiac boats, little rubber boats carrying maybe 6 people, to explore cliffs looking for nesting birds, seals, etc, really fun. The Icelandic horses are very special, purebred. No other breed of horse is allowed on the island so that their gene line cannot get diluted. If an Icelandic horse leaves the island for any reason, it cannot return. They are smaller than other breeds, but much stronger. They have 6 gaits ( walk, trot, cantor, etc.) instead of 4.
